Back to Cardiff + a Little Discipline

Hello Cardiff, my lovely soul home. How I’ve missed your beach, fresh air, Seaside market, Bestawan, VGs and your nasty hills to run up and down. That’s right, take your pick, Birmingham, Chesterfield and the countless beach stairs, they were ready and waiting for me this morning. I had to put the music on extra loud and even duplicate a few songs to muster the discipline to make it through. But when you’re done, huffing and puffing, quads and hamstrings firing, there’s no better feeling. Here’s my playlist in case you’re interested.

Nothing like a new playlist for motivation...

Nothing like a new playlist for motivation…

When I first moved to Cardiff almost 7 years ago, I never in my wildest imagination would’ve thought that I would be running her hills some day. I practiced yoga and was a beach walker through and through. Why anyone would ever want to do something silly like hill running was beyond me. But the more I spent time with the people of north county and their crazy triathlon ways, the more intrigued I became. I am, by no means, hard core. Never have been, probably never will be. But I’m a firm believer in a body in motion stays in motion.

I’m not naturally driven and wired to spring out of bed at 5am feeling the need to get all my pent up energy out on an early morning run. My natural clock starts to chime around 6:45am. Left to my natural devices, I would happily get out of bed around 7am, grab a steaming cup of coffee and settle into the couch for email at 7:15am.

Love this!!!

Love this!!!

But with the OC marathon, coming up, I have done very little running, I’m out of excuses and it’s time to get cracking. After a wonderful, albeit more leisurely, workout schedule living downtown I am back in the hood and it’s time to log some miles. I want to train to have a goal to work toward, to feel strong and to enjoy (if that’s even possible) the race while I’m running it. I confess the last bit seems a bit lofty, but we’ll see. And if a side effect is that my body tones up a bit and feels lighter as we cruise into summer…I’ll take it.

Words to live by...

Thank you Hagrid

Birthday Manifesto 2014

Last year for my birthday I jotted down notes to myself on how I wanted my year to play out. There were certain things I wanted to cultivate and other things I wanted to leave behind. Fear and worry were big on the list of the buh-byes. I’m not saying I’ve conquered these things, but I have brought awareness around them. Maybe I recognize a scary emotion when it’s coming on or am able to let it go sooner instead of spiraling too far down the rabbit hole. I went back and re-read my manifesto a lot throughout the year and it was a great reminder of what I was looking to do, be, feel, etc. If you’ve never written one, I highly recommend it.

Today I had the luxury of going out for a Friday lunch with my lovely friend, Miriam. We were gabbing away and she made me think of my manifesto list. Inspired, I came home and jotted down some notes for 2014. Whenever I do these kinds of things, I try not to edit write away. Rather, I type the list out then go back when I’m finished to see what came up. Then I’ll tweak here and there to swap the order a bit. That way it’s a mixture of light and deep. Sometimes there’s dark too. But my Mom reads this blog and probably gets nervous so I try to tailor it a bit – I promise I’m okay Mom 😉

So anyway, here is my list for 2014. It came to me quickly this year. Literally, it took longer to pick my font than to write it out. Hopefully that means I’m feeling pretty in tune with what I need this year. Or at least, at this moment.

Here’s the manifesto from 2013. I’m hanging on to this one too. There are still so many good reminders on this one. I was only half kidding about picking out my font. Last year’s font is very “flowy” and feminine. This year I was drawn to something a bit more straight forward. It’s pretty, but it’s clean and direct. Which is a bit of the mode I’m in right now. Very interesting.

Thank you Miriam for our perfect lunch at this perfect time peppered with the perfect conversation which inspired this post. Have a wonderful weekend ♥

40 Years of Sunshine

40 years of sunshine was the theme of the weekend. Aka, my birthday and ushering in of a new decade. Gulp. I’ll confess I had some mixed feelings about this, but travel always makes for great transitions. We booked a trip with friends and it was brilliant. Back to the east cape of Cabo w/a weather forecast of 85-90, destination  Vida Soul and 8 of us off on an adventure. We had soooo much fun.

M started my birthday weekend off with a pre-Mexico trip to Gone Bananas, the Mission Beach bikini mecca on Thursday, our vacation eve. Talk about a kid in a candy shop. 2 amazing bikinis later we headed to “practice” for our trip to South Beach Bar & Grill in OB. So fun and playful. M pretty much hit a home run and we hadn’t left the country yet!

Good morning sunshine

Every morning was the same. Wake up, drift downstairs for coffee. Pet dogs. Watch whales leap out of the water. Then go for a run (for some of us)

Afternoon migration

Afternoon migration down to the beach

It was warm, sunny and windy! Can’t tell from the picture, but we were hiding behind a big rock to block the sand storm. Happy happy happy.

That would be Kerri’s arm in the background. Apparently, it’s too hard to sit up for photos when you’re this relaxed…

Overall, the best possible beach getaway a girl can ask for. Great friends, warm sunshine, sandy beach, clear blue/green water, killer bikinis and my love, M. Okay 40s, I think I’m going to like you…♥
