Sunshine Kir

On a daily quest for the eternal sunshine!

Month: January, 2015

Hair Inspo

Bangs, no bangs, super platinum, ombre, carmel w/light blonde highlights…you name it, I’ve tried it. It’s the dead of winter, my skin is a bit pasty and my bangs have grown out almost enough that I’m wondering if I should cut them again. (nooooo, don’t do it!)

I’m itching for change. Which, for me, really only consists of a shade or two difference and whether or not I should get around to trying the wand I bought two months ago. (still in box)

I had lofty aspirations of busting out the wand after I saw it used on a photoshoot. Super simple, you get a glove so you don’t burn yourself, seems full-proof. Now if only I can muster the extra 15 minutes instead of hitting the snooze button I think I’ll be set.

Really, I blame these girls for my sudden need to book a hair appointment…

After watching the Angels sashay down their London runway, I got the sudden urge to trade in my lighter, whiter locks for gold and honey hues. Yes, I realize this is an elite group and we could shave their heads and they’d still look great, but a little inspiration is never a bad thing. And check out the waves…how hard could it be? So how do I actualize this latest craving? 1) book in with my hairdresser – must remember to call her! 2) Test out this great post by Lauryn over at Skinny Confidential. It’s hilarious actually – an entire post devoted to the “sleep bun”. What is a “sleep bun” you ask? Click over here to find out. I confess I didn’t know, you may be ahead of me. Anyhoo, as a result of reading this post, I now have alligator clips. They are the best and worth the investment. The sleep bun is not, I repeat, not sexy. But if you have really long hair, it does keep it out of your and your mister’s face when sleeping. (and much better than Little House on the Prairie braids). I just need to bust out the wand, curl my hair like I’m off to prom in the 90s and then wrap up my sleep bun and hit the hay. If all goes well, the next morning my hair will look like Lauryn’s.

Keep you posted on how this goes! I promise I’ll take before/after pictures even if it’s a disaster 🙂

Why I like New Year’s resolutions…

Who doesn’t love a good reason to hit the reset button?

This year I got a few days head start on setting good habits for the new year. After a lovely, indulgent Christmas spent in Colorado with my family (whiskey tasting anyone?), I came home and hit 3 days of Pilates classes, gave myself a deep cleanse mud mask and found some great recipes for meals to make during the week.

For the most part, I do these little round ups every couple months. But the start of the year offers me the inspiration to beef it up a bit.

Here are a few things I am excited to be doing to kick off 2015:

Writing. Since starting my new job back in April, I have had lots of opportunities to be creative at work that I slacked off a lot on my personal creativity, namely writing. It’s something I love to do so I’m back in. Truth be told, it stopped being fun for a while. Writing should be uninhibited and I found myself censoring thoughts or holding back true feelings. When it stops being fun and/or cathartic then it’s time for a break. My commitment to myself for writing in 2015 is to be authentic. That may mean at times, my writing may not be bright and happy, it might be an outlet for frustration or confessional about things tucked away and people may not want to read it. So be it. I’m not a particularly moody person so I’m guessing I’ll still have more than my fair share of happy posts, but when the occasional gloomy or passionate post comes up, I will let it flow and then on we go 🙂

Pilates. I used to do Pilates a lot when I first moved to San Diego. I really loved it, but it can be quite pricey. For the past 3 1/2 months, I’ve been sidelined with a calf injury which means no running. This is really tricky when you rely on your run to stay in shape. Even yoga was challenging. So in comes Pilates. With places like Club Pilates around, I can get my workouts in and it’s affordable. It has been a game changer. I’ll start running again soon, but Pilates is staying. Maybe someday I’ll be able to do this…

Oil pulling. I tried it last year and loved it. But for some reason, I got distracted (shocking) and moved away from it. Well, back on the horse. Actually doing it while I type this! Most times I wake up, pop in a tablespoon of coconut oil, hop in the shower and, voila, 10-15 minutes of oil pulling completed easy peasy. Free People has a great explanation here if you want more details.

Crystal Deodorant. I have resisted this like no other. About few years ago, I wrote an article for Elephant magazine reviewing the top “natural” deodorants. After road-testing a bunch of options, alas, I didn’t find one that did the trick. A good friend swears by the Thai Crystal and got me thinking it may be worth another try. I’m four days in and I think it may be working. I’m holding on to my Dove stick just in case and will probably revert back for special occasions or public speaking. But please, please, please, if you see me around and I’m stinky, tell me! Honestly and truly, I’ll want to know.

Cooking. Since we moved into our beach cottage, it’s been all too easy to eat out. We have a teeny, yet functional kitchen. But with restaurants a quick walk away and M commuting by train to/from the OC, it’s easy to find excuses not to cook. Thanks to recipes on Pinterest, cleanprogram.com (super simple, easy recipes), the new turbo Nutri-bullet (you know how much I love my nutri-bullet) and a gorgeous set of stainless steel cookware, we are out of excuses! I’ll be making this delicious quinoa today – 5 minutes prep time, 30 minute cook time and voila!

So here’s to our best year yet! May it be full of sunshine, positivity and meaningful, lovely moments. xo
